Website unblocker basics
August 26, 2007
As with everything it helps to start off with the basics. A website unblocker or proxy serves as a go-between the user's computer and the website's server. An unblocker operates on a server that is outside any firewall that restricts the user's computer. This means that the unblocker is unaffected by any restrictions placed on the user's computer.
Another advantage of a proxy is that it allows greater privacy when accessing websites. Every computer on the Internet has its own unique Internet Protocol (IP) address. Whenever a website is directly accessed the user's computer its IP address is logged by the web server. This allows the web server to track which users are accessing the website and what pages they visit. It also possible to identify the user's country of origin and his Internet Service Provider using his IP address.
However if a user uses a proxy (go-between) to access a website his IP address is not revealed and he has greater privacy. The server of the website that the user is accessing only sees the IP of the proxy's server. This also means that the user appears to be coming from the country where the proxy server is located. Since a lot of website servers serve different content to users of different countries, the user will see the website as a user from the proxy server's country.
In my next post I will look at how users use a website unblocker or proxy.
